Argentina vs England: Late Comeback Stuns England in 2026 World Cup Semis

Argentina 2 - 1 England: That Late Heartbreak in Atlanta

I’m still trying to catch my breath after that semi-final. If you were watching the Argentina vs. England game in the 2026 World Cup yesterday, you know exactly what I mean. Atlanta Stadium was absolutely electric, but for the English fans, it ended in total silence.

How it went down For 80 minutes, it looked like England was finally going to get over the hump. They played a controlled, smart game, and when Anthony Gordon put them ahead in the 55th minute, it felt like the dream was alive. The defense was locked in, and Argentina—even with Messi—looked frustrated.

But, you never count out the champions.

The Messi Effect Just when the English fans started planning their final tickets, Lionel Messi decided he wasn’t going home. He took control in the final ten minutes. First, that beautiful setup for Enzo Fernández’s equalizer in the 85th minute changed the entire energy of the stadium.

Then, in stoppage time, Lautaro Martínez finished the job with a header that will be replayed in Argentina for decades. 2-1. Just like that, England was out.

What this means It was a gritty, intense, and frankly, a bit of a nasty game. There were tackles flying everywhere, and the tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife. You could see how much it meant to both sides. Argentina is now on a collision course with Spain for the title on July 19th.

Honestly, watching Messi drag his team back into a game like that... it’s why we watch this sport. Heartbreak for England, but pure genius from the defending champions.

What do you think? Did England play too defensively at the end, or was Messi just unstoppable? Let me know in the comments below!

Argentina vs Egypt 3-2: Messi and Enzo Complete Miraculous World Cup Comeback!

Argentina vs Egypt 3-2: Messi and Enzo Complete Miraculous World Cup Comeback!

Football fans at the Atlanta Stadium just witnessed arguably one of the greatest knockout matches in FIFA World Cup history.

In a staggering Round of 16 clash that will be talked about for decades, defending champions Argentina stared directly into the abyss, trailing 2-0 against a masterfully organized Egypt with just 11 minutes of regulation time left. Yet, through sheer grit, tactical desperation, and individual brilliance, Lionel Scaloni’s men flipped the script to secure a jaw-dropping 3-2 victory, keeping their back-to-back title dreams alive.

The Pharoahs Rip Up the Script

From the opening whistle, Hossam Hassan’s Egypt looked fearless. Relying on a lethal, lightning-fast counter-attacking setup, they shocked the tournament favorites in the 15th minute. Center-back Yasser Ibrahim rose highest, beating Lisandro Martínez to latch onto Marwan Attia’s pinpoint cross and head it into the bottom corner. Atlanta erupted.

Just minutes later, Argentina was thrown a lifeline. Haissem Hassan tripped Nicolás Tagliafico inside the penalty area, giving Argentina a penalty. Up stepped Lionel Messi—but Egypt’s goalkeeper, Mostafa Shobeir, lunged brilliantly to his left to deny the legendary number 10. It was Messi's fourth penalty miss in World Cup history, and anxiety rippled through the Albiceleste faithful.

Things went from bad to worse for the champions. While Egypt had one goal ruled out by VAR, they wouldn't be denied a second. In the 67th minute, another blistering counter-attack saw Mostafa Ziko finish a brilliant team move, putting Egypt up 2-0.

11 Minutes of Pure Madness

With elimination staring them in the face, Argentina found another gear. The comeback spark was ignited in the 79th minute when defender Cristian Romero bundled the ball home from close range after a goalmouth scramble.

Suddenly, Egypt panicked, and Argentina smelled blood. Just four years away from his 40s, Lionel Messi showed why he is considered the greatest of all time. Redeeming his first-half penalty heartbreak, Messi latched onto a loose ball in the 82nd minute and lashed a crisp half-volley into the net to equalize.

With momentum entirely on their side, Argentina pushed for the winner. Deep into stoppage time (90+2'), Enzo Fernández found space in the box and fired home a dramatic winning goal, completing an improbable comeback that broke Egyptian hearts.

What’s Next?

While Egypt exits the tournament with their heads held high after outplaying the world champions for large spells, Argentina advances to a highly anticipated quarterfinal match in Kansas City, where they will face Switzerland.

What did you think of Messi's redemption performance? Can Argentina go all the way again? Let us know in the comments below!
