Lionel Messi’s Emotional Return to the Pitch

Following a difficult personal period in August 2026—marked by the passing of his father and representative, Jorge Messi—Lionel Messi returned to the Inter Miami starting lineup showing immense resilience.

Messi dedicated his recent goals to his father's memory, pointing to the sky in emotional celebrations. Despite taking time off to be in Rosario, Argentina, Messi has quickly refocused on dragging Inter Miami through a challenging phase of their campaign.

The MLS Golden Boot Race: Messi vs. Petar Musa

Even while missing select matches, Messi remains at the sharp end of the 2026 MLS Golden Boot race:

• Lionel Messi (Inter Miami): 14 Goals

• Petar Musa (FC Dallas): 16 Goals

Capitalizing on brilliant service from international teammate Rodrigo De Paul, Messi scored in back-to-back fixtures against Philadelphia Union and Toronto FC to keep himself within two goals of the league lead.

Inter Miami’s Form & Eastern Conference Standings

While Messi continues to produce individually, Inter Miami is enduring a tough patch, staying winless over five straight matches across all competitions (including MLS regular season play and Leagues Cup group action).

Team	Played	MLS Points	Eastern Conference Ranking
Nashville SC	21	49	1st Place
Inter Miami CF	20	39	2nd Place
Chicago Fire	20	36	3rd Place

Despite trailing Nashville in the Supporters' Shield chase, Inter Miami remains firmly inside the MLS Cup Playoff spots.

What’s Next for Inter Miami?

With 13 regular-season matches remaining, head coach Guillermo Hoyos and captain Lionel Messi are aiming to turn around their recent form. In addition to their MLS Cup playoff hunt, Miami is set to clash with Liga MX champion Cruz Azul in the 2026 Champions Cup on September 16.
